The Tambopata National Reserve is a protected area in the southern Amazon rainforest of Peru, recognized as one of the most biodiverse and accessible places on the planet, home to exceptional flora and fauna. This tour to Tambopata allows you to delve into the heart of the jungle and explore the famous Lake Sandoval.
Lake Sandoval is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped lake within the Tambopata National Reserve (Peru), famous for its impressive biodiversity, tranquil waters, and Amazon rainforest surroundings. Surrounded by Aguaje palm trees, it is home to giant otters, black caimans, monkeys, more than a thousand species of birds (such as macaws and the Hoatzin), and Amazonian fish like the Paiche, offering activities such as canoeing, hiking, and wildlife observation in a pristine ecosystem.
The southern part of the Peruvian Amazon is undoubtedly the best option to visit with young children and adults, as it has excellent accessibility.
Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we will pick you up from the airport or bus terminal and take you to our office. We recommend packing only the essentials for your next few days; your main luggage can remain in our storage. You will navigate the Madre de Dios River, a tributary of the Amazon River, for 45 minutes. Then, on a 45-minute trip downstream in a motorized canoe, lunch will be served on board.
Once at the entrance to Lake Sandoval, we will stop at the checkpoint for check-in, and the guide will explain the importance of the place you are visiting. Afterward, we will embark on a 1.5-hour hike through the rainforest. As we progress, the jungle transitions from secondary to primary rainforest until we reach a small channel where you will board rowing canoes. You will paddle for 100 meters (approximately the same in yards) through a swamp of Aguaje palm trees. These palms provide the most popular fruit in the Peruvian rainforest, widely consumed by locals in drinks and ice cream.
Once we reach the lake, we'll continue to our Eco Lodge, where you'll be assigned your rooms. After a short rest, you'll embark on your first activity: a boat trip to enjoy a spectacular sunset and observe the wildlife in all its splendor, including night monkeys and bats. Then, you'll prepare to go in search of black caimans (caiman tour in Tambopata). Lake Sandoval is home to the largest black caimans in the Peruvian Amazon; this species can measure between 5 and 6 meters in length and has been sighted in this lake.
To end this first day on a high note, you'll savor a typical Tambopata jungle dinner.
You will cross Lake Sandoval by canoe, take a short trail off the main road, and about 1 km along the way, there is a special spot where every morning parrots and macaws gather to eat tree bark, which is very rich in minerals. Dozens of blue, yellow, and red macaws take turns feeding on the minerals in the dead palms or the palm trees where they nest. On the way back from the parrot spectacle, we have the opportunity to see the friendly family of giant otters that are very active at that time in the lake. The giant otters eat an average of 8 pounds of fish per day (4 kilos).
The Tambopata tour on Lake Sandoval offers abundant wildlife, including: 6 species of monkeys, black caimans, more than 40 species of birds that live along the lake shore, all 5 species of kingfishers in Peru, and the most abundant group of Hoatzins. All the animals here are easy to photograph from the boats. You will return to the lodge for breakfast and a short rest before the next adventure of the day.
Then you will venture deep into the rainforest to see giant trees such as the kapok tree, the ironwood tree, and the Brazil nut tree. Your guide will show you and demonstrate how we harvest and market this product, which is so important to our local economy. You will also see the Ayahuasca vine and Chacruna leave, the main ingredients to make the millennial ayahuasca ceremony.
Afterward, we will return to the lodge for a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, you will paddle to an observation tower where you can appreciate a beautiful sunset and explore a different area of the lake in search of the various troops of monkeys, which are very active at this time of day. Brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys live in the forest near the lake. To end the day before dinner, you will take a night walk to see insects, tarantulas, and snakes in the Tambopata Reserve.
** You will go deeper in the Tambopata rainforest to have better chances to spot animals.
After breakfast, you'll pack your belongings to leave the Sandoval Lake Reserve. You'll then take a tour of Monkey Island, where you can observe three types of monkeys: white capuchin monkeys, black capuchin monkeys, and squirrel monkeys. Afterward, you'll return to the city of Puerto Maldonado and we'll transfer you to the airport.
Come with us—an incredible experience awaits!
