This 4-day tour in the Tambopata Reserve allows you to explore the two most outstanding sites in this protected natural area: You’ll have the opportunity to see red, yellow, blue, and green macaws at the largest macaw clay lick in South America, and also visit Lake Sandoval, where you’ll observe giant river otters and black caimans.
Tambopata is home to a great diversity of amphibians, reptiles, fish, mammals, medicinal plants, timber, and fruit trees, as well as indigenous communities that have practiced Ayahuasca ceremonies since time immemorial.
After your arrival in the morning to Puerto Maldonado, you will be met by our guide and taken to our office. Where you will leave your luggage that are not necessary for the trip. At 10 AM. you will board a van for 2 hours to the Tambopata River port. the first part will be on a paved road and the second part will be on a dirt road. Your boat will be waiting for you to take us to the Lodge, “HACIENDA TAMBOPATA”, once you arrive at the hostel, a welcome drink awaits us and the manager will explain everything we need to know about your hostel and its surroundings.
After lunch you will make an introduction walk in a secondary forest and then in a primary forest full of huge trees and vines, at the same time we will talk about the most important economic activities in this region. You will have big possibilities of detecting some black capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys. When it gets dark you will return to the lodge to look for our flashlight and go to your boat and do one of the most exciting activities a night walk in the forest, exploring and discovering the mysteries of the Tambopata jungle at night.
To end this first day on a high note, you'll savor a typical Tambopata jungle dinner.
You will wake up around 5:00 AM. and will be driven for 1 hour and 30 minutes upstream to the Chuncho macaw clay lick. You will have the sunrise in the boat, and you will have very good chances of seeing shorebirds, capybaras, white alligators, and why not mention a jaguar or an anaconda, I like to say it, we have a 20% chance of seeing to one of these guys by the river.
Arriving at your destination, you will have a show in the clay lick. Green, red, blue and yellow macaws and parrots around you, flying and making loud noises, this bird’s behavior will be spectacular. Your guide will explain the reason why every day around this year and at the same time, the birds go to the cliff to eat clay. You will have a picnic breakfast in front of the Chuncho macaw clay lick.
At the end of this activity, on your way down the river to the Lodge, then you will be driven by boat and car for 2 hours to Puerto Maldonado to then head to the Sandoval Lake. You will navigate the Madre de Dios River for 45 minutes. Once you reach the Sandoval port, you will make a walk of 1 hour and a half through the tropical forest, and you will make a stop at the checkpoint for check-in and the guide will explain the importance of the place to visit. As you move forward the forest is changing from secondary to primary forest once you arrive at the Sandoval port, where you will take a small paddle canoe that takes you through a channel of the Sandoval Lake to your Lodge.
While paddling you observe bats and night monkeys jumping from tree to tree. To finish this Tambopata tour, you will have a very rewarding dinner.
** You will visit the Chuncho macaw clay lick and Sandoval Lake to have better chances to spot animals.
You will cross Lake Sandoval by canoe, take a short trail off the main road, and about 1 km along the way, there is a special spot where every morning parrots and macaws gather to eat tree bark, which is very rich in minerals. Dozens of blue, yellow, and red macaws take turns feeding on the minerals in the dead palms or the palm trees where they nest. On the way back from the parrot spectacle, we have the opportunity to see the friendly family of giant otters that are very active at that time in the lake. The giant otters eat an average of 8 pounds of fish per day (4 kilos).
The Tambopata tour on Lake Sandoval offers abundant wildlife, including: 6 species of monkeys, black caimans, more than 40 species of birds that live along the lake shore, all 5 species of kingfishers in Peru, and the most abundant group of Hoatzins. All the animals here are easy to photograph from the boats. You will return to the lodge for breakfast and a short rest before the next adventure of the day.
Then you will venture deep into the rainforest to see giant trees such as the kapok tree, the ironwood tree, and the Brazil nut tree. Your guide will show you and demonstrate how we harvest and market this product, which is so important to our local economy. You will also see the Ayahuasca vine and Chacruna leave, the main ingredients to make the millennial ayahuasca ceremony.
Afterward, we will return to the lodge for a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, you will paddle to an observation tower where you can appreciate a beautiful sunset and explore a different area of the lake in search of the various troops of monkeys, which are very active at this time of day. Brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys live in the forest near the lake. To end the day before dinner, you will take a night walk to see insects, tarantulas, and snakes in the Tambopata Reserve.

After breakfast, you'll pack your belongings to leave the Sandoval Lake Reserve. You'll then take a tour of Monkey Island, where you can observe three types of monkeys: white capuchin monkeys, black capuchin monkeys, and squirrel monkeys. Afterward, you'll return to the city of Puerto Maldonado and we'll transfer you to the airport.
